Traditional Windmills in England
In the late 12th century traditional windmills started to appear in England in which they typically were found on the East and South of the country. Counties such as, East Yorkshire, Essex, Lincolnshire, Norfolk, Sussex, and Suffolk are the most popular areas to find a windmill.
The types of traditional mills found across England were Tower Mills, Post Mills, and Smock Mills. They were one of the pioneers in harnessing wind power, primarily for milling corn. However traditional windmills as the history books state became integral to England’s agricultural and industrial sectors.
As industries evolved, many English windmills fell into disuse, but there’s a revival underway. Today, some serve as residential properties, tourist attractions, transformed into visitor centers or museums – whilst others still lay untouched.
